From Child Star to College Student: Alana Thompson’s Unexpected Journey
Alana Thompson, widely known as Honey Boo Boo, has spent nearly her entire life in the public eye. Many people first met her as the outspoken child pageant contestant who stole the spotlight on television. But today, her life looks very different from the reality TV world that made her famous.
Now turning 20 and pursuing a serious career path, Alana’s story has evolved from childhood fame to personal growth, family struggles, and big plans for the future. Her journey hasn’t been easy, but it shows just how much a person can change over time.
From Pageant Kid to Reality TV Star
Alana first appeared on the reality show Toddlers & Tiaras when she was only about five years old. Unlike the typical quiet and perfectly polished pageant contestants, Alana stood out immediately. She was loud, confident, funny, and completely unfiltered.
Her personality quickly caught viewers’ attention, and before long she became one of the most talked-about kids on the show.
That popularity led to a new reality series in 2012 called Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which aired on TLC. The show followed Alana’s life along with her mother June Shannon and her sisters Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, and Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird.
For four seasons, viewers watched the family’s chaotic, funny, and sometimes controversial everyday life. The show became incredibly popular and turned Alana into a household name almost overnight.
When the Show Was Suddenly Canceled
In 2014, everything changed. TLC decided to cancel the show after reports surfaced that Mama June was involved with a man who had previously been convicted of serious crimes.
The controversy created major backlash, and the network chose to end the series immediately.
For Alana, who had grown up with cameras around her, the sudden disappearance of the show meant losing the platform that had defined much of her childhood. But the challenges in her life didn’t disappear along with the TV production.

Returning to Television
A few years later, Alana returned to television through another reality series called Mama June: Family Crisis.
This show focused on the family’s struggles, including Mama June’s battle with addiction and the complicated relationships within the household. Unlike earlier programs that focused mainly on entertainment, this series revealed many of the difficult realities the family was facing.
One of the most heartbreaking moments came when Alana’s sister Anna Cardwell was diagnosed with cancer. Anna sadly passed away in December 2023, leaving the family devastated. Viewers who had followed the family for years witnessed not just reality TV drama but real grief and loss.
Dancing With the Stars: Juniors
In 2018, Alana had a chance to participate in something completely different when she joined Dancing with the Stars: Juniors.
She partnered with dancer Tristan Ianiero, and the pair eventually finished in eighth place. While the competition was challenging and stressful, it gave Alana an opportunity to step outside the reality TV world she had grown up in and try something new.
It also showed audiences that she was capable of focusing on her own interests and talents beyond the family chaos that often surrounded her.
Custody Drama and a Sister Stepping In
Behind the scenes, life became even more complicated in 2019. Mama June was arrested and charged with drug possession, which led to her losing custody of Alana.
At that point, Alana’s older sister Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird stepped in and became her legal guardian.
For many people, it was shocking to see a sister suddenly taking on the responsibilities of a parent. Eventually, Lauryn gained full custody during Alana’s teenage years, helping provide stability during a very difficult period.
A Complicated Relationship With Her Mother
Alana’s relationship with Mama June has often been described as complicated. Over the years, they have had both tense conflicts and moments of reconciliation.
In 2023, all of June’s daughters attended her wedding to Justin Stroud, which many people saw as a hopeful sign that the family might be rebuilding their relationships.
However, new tension surfaced in 2024 when Alana publicly claimed that her mother had taken $35,000 of money she earned as a child and never returned it.
Despite the accusations, Alana has also made it clear that she doesn’t want to completely erase her mother from her life. Around the release of the Lifetime biopic I Was Honey Boo Boo, she explained that her goal wasn’t simply to criticize her mom but to share her story honestly.
College Life and a New Career Path
One of the most surprising developments in Alana’s life is her focus on building a serious future outside of television.
She graduated from high school in 2023 and later enrolled at Regis University in Colorado. Her goal is to become a neonatal nurse, working with newborn babies who need specialized medical care.
This career choice is a major shift from the world of reality TV and social media fame. Neonatal nursing requires years of study, long hours, and emotional strength. For Alana, choosing this path shows that she wants to build a meaningful and stable career.
A Relationship Under Public Scrutiny
As Alana entered adulthood, her personal life also began receiving attention. She started dating Dralin Carswell when she was 16 while he was 21, which sparked controversy and criticism online.
Many people expressed concern about the age difference, but Alana defended the relationship and said the people closest to her supported it.
Today, the couple reportedly lives together in Colorado while Alana continues her college studies. Now an adult, she appears determined to handle her personal life on her own terms.
A New Chapter
Alana Thompson’s life has been anything but ordinary. From childhood fame and family scandals to personal loss and new ambitions, her journey has been filled with challenges and change.
But one thing seems clear: she is working hard to build a future that goes far beyond the television personality people once knew as Honey Boo Boo.
Her story is no longer just about reality TV — it’s about growing up, overcoming difficult circumstances, and choosing a new direction for her life.
